Over 50 years ago, in September of 1965, the General Manager of Shelby American, Peyton Cramer, and the Hertz Corporation came to a brilliant business agreement: They would offer the 1966 GT350-H as a rental car through the now-famous Hertz “Rent-a-Racer” Program. This deal created 1,000 Shelby Mustang GT350-H’s for use in the Hertz rental fleet.
This car, Shelby number SFM6S1623 (Original Ford serial number 6R09K175621 with matching engine number 6R09K175621) was among the first batch of cars invoiced to the Hertz Corporation and delivered to Fuller Ford in Cincinnati, Ohio (delivery #656) on March 31, 1966. It was then dealer prepared before going into service in the Hertz Sports Car Club rental program. In Aug. 2000 a previous owner commissioned a restoration by Classics Plus of Shakopee, MN from 10/2001 to 3/2003. The owner entrusted the original numbers matching engine to Off Road Specialties in Blaine, MN. for a complete rebuild. The owner also acquired and installed many hard-to-find parts and accessories to put the finishing touches on the restoration. At that time a period correct 4-speed manual transmission was installed. The current owner purchased the car in 2009 and has maintained the car in top condition. It is rare to find such a car with an unbroken chain of ownership history and service invoices.
