    Description

Fine M1870 U.S. Navy Rifle Saber Bayonet.  This bayonet has a most unusual attachment system. The back of the feathered brass grip has a high, flat ridge that attaches to the gun.  This, therefore, makes the countour of the grip quite unique. The pommel has the board of Naval Ordnance Monogram cast into it and has a bird's beak pommel.*  The blade is straight with a central fuller measuring 20-1/8" with an overall length of 25".  Ricasso area of blade shows, "AMES MFG. CO/CHICOPEE" Obverse side marked, "U.S.N. GGS 1870".  The Cross-guard is stamped with a "S" as is the brass point on the scabbard.  Top of spine of brass handle stamped, "GGS" and pommel end stamped, "IA...?"  Both sides of blades are fine  with one side showing a scattered smooth light gray spotted patina.  Excellent working press-stud, leather intact with stitching solid.  A beautiful item, hard to find in this condition.   See photos for further details, clarification, and condition.
